Easy, Breezy Summer Makeup: The Best Makeup for Summer
5.) Go Easy on the Bronzer
While it’s better to have a faux glow than to expose your delicate facial skin to the sun’s harmful rays, it’s best to exercise restraint when applying your bronzer (you don’t want to look like an Oompa-Loompa). Find a color of bronzer that’s just a few shades darker than your real skin tone. When applying it, only use it where the sun would naturally hit your face — cheekbones, forehead, and nose. You may also want to use a highlighter on the apples of your cheeks to balance out your look.
4.) Wear Gold-tinted Lipstick
If you want something a little more pronounced than chapstick or gloss, swap out your normal lip color for a pink or red with gold tones in it to reflect light and give your lips a summery sheen. As with your face makeup, if you can find lipstick or chapstick with SPF, opt for that version over the non-SPF ones. And make sure that your lips stay hydrated, the summer sun can be damaging to the sensitive skin on your lips (and sunburned lips are not fun!).
3.) Experiment with Color
Summer is the perfect time to let loose and have some fun with your makeup colors, especially if you’re headed out to a summer BBQ or beach party. There’s really no wrong color for this season as long as you love it. Go for shimmery gold, bright corals, electric blues, and even lime green and orange. Some stores will even carry makeup palettes designed just for summer. Sweep it over your entire eyelid to accentuate your eyes.
2.) Moisturize and Use SPF
Chances are that you’re going to be out in the sun a lot more as it gets warmer. But now more than ever you need to protect your skin from the sun, so make sure you always wear a moisturizer or makeup that contains SPF. Start with a clean face that’s been patted dry then apply a tinted moisturizer with SPF at least 8 to 15. But if you’re going to be out in direct sunlight for more than an hour, you’ll definitely want something with more SPF and to apply it frequently. You can simply apply with your fingertips, or if you’re worried about excess oil, use a makeup sponge.
1.) Lighter is Better
When it comes to summer face makeup, keep it light and natural-looking. Stock your makeup bag with a tinted moisturizer instead of your regular foundation, chapstick or clear gloss instead of lipstick, a light bronzer instead of blush, and a shimmery, gold eye shadow. Leave the heavy liner and bold eye shadow for any other time of year, and focus on bringing out your skin’s natural health and glow.
If your skin does start to get oily or shiny, carry oil-blotting sheets with you in your purse and use them throughout the day. You should also bring along some pressed powder that you can sweep over your face. And above all, don’t stress over your summer makeup routine. If there’s one time of year that you can throw out all the rules and make your own style, it’s summer.
