She would Not Be Upstaged

It was supposed to be her special day. But then it was ruined by someone she had only just met. Stacey couldn’t believe the audacity of this person trying to steal the spotlight.

Love At First Sight

For Stacey and Derek, it was love at first sight. They met at a bar one night when they were each out with friends and hit it off immediately.

Derek thought Stacey was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen and was keen to ask her out.

Stacey was keen on him but played the proverbial hard-to-get game.

Declaring Her Undying Love

They couldn’t get enough of one another. They saw each other almost every day and before long they moved in together.

The relationship was moving fast and Stacey’s friends cautioned her about moving too fast in the relationship that was just three months old.

But Stacey paid no mind and swiftly told them that she had finally found her soulmate.

The One

It was a bit much coming from someone who had sworn off all men after her last breakup ended in tears.

But Stacey had stars in her eyes and butterflies in her stomach and no one was going to change her mind.

Derek was amazing and she thought he was the best boyfriend she had ever had in her life.

Big Plans

Derek was making big plans for his future with Stacey. He didn’t have any family in the state where he was staying so his plans were to start creating his own.

He was planning something big that would take Stacey’s breath away.

He roped in some friends to help him even though they too were skeptical of the two of them that were moving so fast.

The Proposal

On their six-month anniversary, Derek took Stacey on a surprise weekend getaway. They stayed at a beautiful resort, went on romantic walks, and enjoyed candlelit dinners.

On the final night of their stay, Derek got down on one knee and proposed to Stacey. He had a ring, a heartfelt speech, and tears in his eyes.

Stacey was over the moon with excitement and said yes without hesitation.

The Wedding Planning

Stacey was ecstatic about planning their dream wedding. She wanted everything to be perfect and spared no expense in getting the best venue, the most exquisite gown, and the most talented vendors.

Derek was happy to let her take the lead and agreed with all her choices.

They were both looking forward to their special day with great anticipation.

The Mystery Mother-In-Law

Throughout their relationship, Derek never spoke much about his family. Stacey never pushed him for information, thinking he would open up when he was ready.

But as the wedding day drew near, Stacey became curious and asked Derek if his parents would be attending.

He hesitated and then revealed that his mother was estranged from the family and they hadn’t spoken in years.

Stacey didn’t pry too much, it sounded like a sensitive issue. She knew that his family stayed in another state but surely they would be coming to their wedding, right?

She asked him about the rest of his family and he told her that they had already been invited. Stacey was overjoyed that she would finally be meeting Derek’s family. 

Since the wedding was only a month away they would be arriving over the weekend. Stacey couldn’t contain her excitement.

They were going to have a barbeque to welcome everyone.

Meeting The Family

Saturday couldn’t come quickly enough. Derek went to the airport to fetch everyone while Stacey was left to prepare some welcome snacks and drinks.

As soon as they arrived, Stacey was overwhelmed by how kind and loving they were toward her.

She couldn’t have asked for better in-laws.

What About Mom?

Once everyone was settled and seated around the table to eat, Stacey decided to ask Derek’s brother Damian about their mother.

He scrunched up his face and sighed.

Stacey knew that she had opened up a can of worms, but luckily she was just talking to him and no one else could hear them at the table.

A Sore Topic

Before he spoke, Stacey could see it was a sore topic for Damian to talk about and she instantly regretted bringing it up.

Just when she wanted to apologize, he eventually mustered up the courage to open up.

Their mother was in Philadelphia and he hadn’t seen her in three months but they occasionally spoke over the phone.

A Bad Fight

Damian shifted uncomfortably in his seat. He most definitely didn’t want Derek to hear what they were talking about.

He proceeded to tell her that Derek and his mom had a nasty falling out three years ago and from then on he didn’t want anything to do with her.

Damian didn’t elaborate on what they fought about but Stacey could only imagine that it was bad.

The Revelation

Stacey was shocked to learn that Derek and his mother had a massive fight, and even more shocked to hear that she had not been invited to the wedding.

Damian went on to explain that their mother had been struggling with alcoholism for years.

And her behavior had caused a lot of tension in the family.

The Plan

Stacey knew that she had to do something. She couldn’t imagine not inviting Derek’s mother to their wedding.

She started to formulate a plan, trying to think of a way to include her without causing any drama.

She decided to speak with Derek about it to see if he was on board with the idea.

Derek’s Reaction

When Stacey broached the topic with Derek, he was hesitant at first.

He didn’t want to cause any trouble on their wedding day, but he also didn’t want to exclude his mother.

After much discussion, they both agreed that it was important to include her, but they had to be careful how they did it.

The Invitation

Stacey decided to call Derek’s mother and invite her personally. She wanted to explain that they understood she had been going through a tough time, but that they still wanted her to be a part of their special day.

To her surprise, Derek’s mother was overjoyed and immediately accepted the invitation.

Stacey couldn’t believe that her plan was working and the whole family would be together to celebrate their special day.

A Spa Day

It was two days before the wedding and Derek’s mother was expected to arrive. She scheduled her bridesmaids, maid of honor, her mom, and Derek’s mother, Jackie, to join her for a spa day.

They all met up at the spa for a light breakfast but Jackie was nowhere to be seen. She hadn’t made it to the breakfast or the spa date.

Where was she?

He Was Right

As Stacey lay on the massage table, she couldn’t help but wonder what had become of Jackie.

Who on earth turns down a free spa day and a chance to meet your soon-to-be daughter-in-law?

She was baffled but then remembered all of Derek’s warnings and couldn’t help but think that he was right all this time. 

A Grand Entrance

Just as the group was sitting down for lunch, in walked a lady dressed in a flowing dress looking very flashy.

She called for Stacey at the top of her lungs, “Stacey, where are you, honey?!”

Stacey instinctively ducked and could’ve died of embarrassment at the loud and over-the-top display of affection that Jackie gave her.

Not Impressed

But she was glad that she eventually showed up, albeit five hours later. She loudly introduced herself to everyone around the table. Stacey’s mother was not all impressed.

She then proceeded to order the most expensive meal on the menu plus a bottle of French champagne.

Stacey couldn’t believe what she was seeing. Was this her mother-in-law? 

Regret Always Comes Too Late

She kind of regretted calling her but she wanted Derek to have his mother present at his wedding. She was beginning to see why Derek hadn’t invited her in the first place.

She was not what she had expected but she wanted to get to know her nonetheless, she was still family.

Jackie spoke to everyone around the table and that’s when Stacey noticed something strange.

Nothing To Say

Jackie didn’t even sit down and speak to Stacey yet. She didn’t even look in her direction. This was really weird and Stacey was getting an uneasy feeling about her.

Everyone seemed to like her, but when was she planning on getting to know her daughter-in-law?

Stacey supposed she would have to make the first move.

Getting To Know Jackie

Stacey went to sit next to her and they chatted for a little bit. Stacey noticed that it was more like small talk and she didn’t really reveal too much about herself.

Stacey saw this as an immediate red flag. She asked about Derek and wanted to know how long they had been together.

Then she said something shocking, “Don’t you think it’s a bit too soon to be getting married?” Stacey’s jaw dropped.

Why Was She So Negative?

Stacey didn’t say anything and sat quietly thinking about everything Derek had warned her about. She wasn’t going to let Jackie ruin her day.

They were getting married tomorrow and she didn’t need the negativity that was radiating off of Jackie.

Little did Stacey know that things were going to go from bad to worse.

The Big Day

The wedding day arrived and Stacey was nervous about how everything would play out. She knew that Jackie would be there, but she wasn’t sure how everyone else would react.

As she walked down the aisle, she scanned the crowd and saw Jackie sitting in the front row.

She was wearing a beautiful dress, and Stacey could see that she was emotional.

The Mother Of The Groom

After the ceremony, Stacey was standing outside when she saw Jackie walking toward her. She had tears in her eyes and a huge smile on her face.

As she got closer, Stacey could see that she was wearing a white dress. Jackie had changed her attire.

Stacey was stunned but didn’t want to make a scene.

The Audacity

“Mom, what are you doing? Why would you wear a white dress today of all days?” Derek was furious as he asked Jackie the question. Jackie was clearly trying to be the center of attention.

Derek knew it was a bad idea to invite his mother and Stacey could now see why. It was revealed that the fight they had years ago was about Jackie not liking any of Derek’s girlfriends and she was always trying to break them up.

Stacey was astounded by what she was hearing.

Not Bothered

But Stacey assured him that she wasn’t bothered at all. All they had to do was continue having fun on their day, there was nothing she could do, they were already married. 

Jackie eventually became so drunk that Damian and his father escorted her out. She later apologized to Derek and Stacey for her behavior and they are slowly letting her be part of their lives again.
