She felt her face getting hot as she weighed up her options. It was a situation no one should ever be put in. She looked for a way out, but she knew it was all over.

That’s when she heard the shouting from outside her window. She opened it and looked down to see a familiar face. It was the homeless man she had been incredibly rude to just days before.

“Don’t be silly,” Her mother said. “Take his car for now; you could use a set of wheels anyway.” As much as Delores wanted to turn down the offer, her mother was right.

Delores took the keys and made her way home, but she had no idea what was waiting for her just a few blocks from her modest apartment. She would accidentally offend someone.

She got to a red traffic light just a few blocks from her home. While stopped there, she saw a homeless man sitting by the side of the road. He greeted her in a friendly manner.

The man came up to the window and asked her if she had any spare change. Delores must have forgotten what she was driving when she used a poor choice of words.

“Sorry, but I don’t have any spare cash right now.” As soon as she said it, she immediately realized how it must have looked. The homeless man took a double take, looking at her expensive car.

Mumbling Something

The homeless man scoffed before mumbling, “I’m sure you could spare something with a car like that.” He left her alone and walked back to where he was sitting.

Delores felt awful, but it was true. Even though she had a lot of money in her account, it was all frozen for at least the next week. She wished the interaction had gone better, but she had no idea who she had just scorned.

Delores had collected her children next door before taking them inside. They were just as sad as their mother that their grandpa had just died, but unlike them, Delores had to be strong.

Flames Getting Closer

The flames were getting closer, and there was no escape. Delores quickly dropped her five year old too. But again, the man caught her effortlessly. He put her down and made her hold the baby.

But this was the most difficult part. Delores herself had to get down somehow. But the man would say something that changed everything.

Taking The Plunge

“You need to come out of this, okay, you hear?” He shouted to the frantic mom. “These children need their mother, so please, come down. I’ll catch you, I promise.” Delores saw the compassion in his eyes, and she let go of the windowsill.

Time felt as if it had stopped; his words had motivated her as she fell through the air. But then she came back to reality, and she was in his arms – he had caught her!

Inferno

Delores looked back at her house and saw it engulfed in flames. It was a raging inferno now, and she and her kids would have been trapped inside if not for the selfless man.

She called him an angel as tears streamed down her eyes. She hugged her kids and held them close. After another five minutes, firefighters came to put out the blaze.

Twist Of Fate

The irony wasn’t lost on Delores. In a twist of fate, she was now homeless, just like the man standing next to her. She thanked him again and told him she’d try to return the favor somehow.

The man smiled and shook her hand before saying, “Paul, you can call me Paul.” She smiled back. They would both get through the ordeal together and become lifelong friends.
