Del Miedo A La Ira 

El pánico se apoderó de ella mientras escuchaba hablar a la cuidadora.

Intenta reunir las palabras para expresar su miedo, pero no las encuentra.

Su suegra lo había hecho, se había llevado a su hija sin consultarla. Sus fosas nasales se encendieron cuando el miedo se transformó en ira. Le daría a la mujer una lección que nunca olvidaría. 

Llegar A Un Acuerdo

Por desgracia para Linnet Harker, no era la primera vez que ella y su suegra se enfrentaban.

Sabía que la mujer era problemática desde el primer día que la vio. 

Pero, como cualquier buena nuera que se precie, intentó que las cosas funcionaran, esperando que la mujer hiciera lo mismo. Si tan sólo supiera en lo que se había metido. 

Un Sueño 

Linnet tenía veintiocho años cuando se casó.

Siempre había soñado con formar una gran familia con el amor de su vida y se había pasado toda la veintena buscando a su alma gemela. 

Estaba eufórica cuando conoció a Andy Kearney, que haría realidad todos sus sueños. Ella no tenía ni idea de que él venía con una terrible pesadilla: a saber, su madre. 

Un Encuentro Casual 

Fue amor a primera vista cuando Linnet y Andy se conocieron. Un encuentro casual con él en su Walmart local dio a luz a una cita de café, que más tarde se graduó a las fechas de cine y picnics en el parque. 

Andy era todo lo que Linnet siempre quiso en un compañero. Era inteligente y seguro de sí mismo, trabajador pero generoso y estaba de buen ver. La hacía sentir especial, un sentimiento que nunca antes había experimentado.

Para ella, era perfecto. Pero todo esto cambiaría cuando conoció a la que entonces era la mujer número uno de su vida. 

Conocer A Su Madre

Andy no perdió el tiempo presentando a Linnet a su madre. Linnet tenía la esperanza de que ella y la mujer empezaran con buen pie inmediatamente. Esta era la madre del amor de su vida, después de todo. 

Pero donde Andy era amable, dulce y comprensivo, su madre, Molly, era grosera, con derecho, y francamente audaz. Linnet pensó que esto se debía a que acababa de conocer a la mujer.

Rezaba para que Molly se encariñara pronto con ella. Pero las cosas sólo irían de mal en peor. 

Mal Comportamiento 

El comportamiento de Molly no mejoró con el paso de las semanas. Constantemente hacía sentir a Linnet que no era suficiente para Andy.

Ella la destrozaba en cada oportunidad, trabajando duro para tratar de romper la relación. 

Se puso tan mal que Linnet decidió que ya era suficiente. Ella le dijo a Andy todo, diciéndole que iba a cancelar su relación si las cosas continuaban de esta manera. Fue entonces cuando Andy hizo lo inesperado.

Enfrentarse a Ella

Un lívido Andy fue a casa de su madre a primera hora de la mañana.

Llevó a Linnet con él, con la esperanza de que esto le mostraría lo mucho que significaba para él. 

No se anduvo con rodeos. Con los puños cerrados y un vano tictac en la frente, le dijo a Molly que aunque estaba agradecido por todo lo que había hecho por él, no le gustaba cómo trataba a su novia. Pero eso era sólo el principio.

Un Grave Error 

Confesó su amor por Linnet delante de ella y de su madre.

Linnet tuvo que apartar la mirada para secarse las lágrimas, ya que era la primera vez que Andy le decía que la amaba. 

También fue el momento en que ella supo que lo amaba. También pudo ver a Molly conteniendo las lágrimas y pensó que la mujer finalmente haría las paces. Pero estaría muy equivocada. 

Esperando Su Momento 

Como un dragón herido, Molly regresó a su guarida para conspirar.

Los meses se convirtieron en años, y Andy le propuso matrimonio a Linnet. Los dos se casaron en una preciosa ceremonia en la playa, y seis meses después, Linnet estaba embarazada. 

Los recién casados no podían ser más felices. Linnet siempre había querido tener una familia numerosa, y con su marido era posible. Si al menos supiera lo que planeaba su suegra. 

Recuperando La Forma

Después de la confrontación entre Andy y Molly unos años atrás, Molly rara vez se ponía en contra de Linnet.

Pero esto cambió inmediatamente el día en que iba a dar a luz. 

Molly apareció en su puerta el día del parto de Linnet, exigiendo estar en la habitación cuando Linnet diera a luz. Pero esa sería la exigencia más sensata que haría ese día. 

Mostrar Interés 

Al principio, Linnet sólo había planeado que su madre, su mejor amiga y Andy estuvieran en la sala de partos.

Como Molly y ella apenas hablaban, no había pensado que la mujer quisiera participar en el nacimiento del bebé. 

Además, Molly se había mostrado fría y distante cuando Andy le dio la noticia de que Linnet estaba embarazada. A pesar de todo, estaba a punto de convertir un buen día en una de las experiencias más angustiosas que Linnet tendría que soportar. 

Comienza La Pesadilla

Lo primero que hizo fue entrar por la fuerza en la sala de partos, interrumpiendo el intenso e igualmente privado asunto.

Linnet siempre había sido una persona reservada e incluso había debatido si debía dejar entrar a su propia madre en la sala de partos. 

Y aquí estaba Molly, entrando a la fuerza en la sala sin siquiera un “Hola”. La pesadilla de Linnet acababa de empezar. 

El Centro Del Escenario

Molly exigió ser la protagonista del parto.

No paraba de mencionar datos sobre sí misma, diciendo que era la más indicada para ayudar a traer al mundo al hijo de Linnet porque tenía cinco hijos. 

No mencionó que ninguno de sus hijos estaba en contacto con ella por lo controladora que era. Pero no se detuvo ahí. 

Una Mujer Retorcida 

A pesar de que los dos le dijeron que ya habían decidido un nombre, ella exigió que Andy y Linnet le pusieran su nombre al niño.

Se echó a llorar, llorando dramáticamente mientras se tiraba del pelo y afirmaba que Linnet había puesto a su hijo en su contra. 

Aunque finalmente se calmó, ella había conseguido que el día girara en torno a ella, robándoselo a Linnet y a su bebé. Linnet debería haber sabido que esto no era más que el principio.

La Vida Como Padres

Aunque tener un bebé fue estupendo para Linnet y Andy, conllevó algunos cambios en su vida que tuvieron que poner en práctica de inmediato.

Para empezar, ambos eran profesionales, lo que significaba que tendrían que encontrar una guardería para su angelito, al que llamaron Kris. 

No tardaron mucho en encontrar un lugar en el que se sintieran cómodos. La guardería estaba dirigida por una maravillosa mujer de setenta años que había trabajado como pediatra durante décadas. Pero nada de eso le importaría aparentemente a Molly. 

Una Entrevista Necesaria

Linnet y Andy visitaron la guardería, asegurándose de que era la adecuada para ellos.

Incluso conocieron al propietario y a los empleados y, al final de la visita, supieron que habían encontrado lo que buscaban. 

Llevaron a Kris a la guardería a la mañana siguiente, y todo el mundo la adoraba, incluidos los otros niños. Pero, sin que Linnet lo supiera, alguien más había puesto sus ojos en su hija. 

La Primera Semana

La primera semana de Kris en la guardería transcurrió con normalidad. Pero al llegar la nueva semana, las cosas empezaron a cambiar.

Linnet había ido el lunes a recoger a su hija. Aunque había llevado a Kris al mediodía, estaba impaciente por volver a tener a la niña de ocho meses en sus brazos.

Pero su mundo estaba a punto de dar un vuelco. 

En La Guardería

Una alegre Linnet saludó a todo el mundo al entrar en la guardería.

Incluso se detuvo unos segundos para charlar con algunos de los padres y tutores que venían a recoger a sus hijos. 

El sol se estaba poniendo, así que tendría un poco de tiempo entre la lactancia de Kris y la preparación de la cena. Pero ninguno de sus planes vería fruto esta noche. 

La Recepción

Linnet se apresuró a llegar a la recepción y dijo que estaba allí para recoger a Kris.

La mujer que estaba detrás del mostrador dio unos golpecitos en su tableta, desplazándose durante unos segundos.

Sus cejas se fruncieron y la sonrisa que había lucido durante todo el intercambio se desvaneció. “Señora”, susurró mientras sus ojos se abrían de par en par. “Alguien ya ha recogido a Kris”. 

Se Ha Ido 

“¿Qué?” preguntó Linnet. Inclinó la cabeza sobre el mostrador para ver mejor la pantalla.

Pudo ver que el nombre de Kris ya estaba marcado. Alguien ya la había recogido. 

Pero, ¿quién podía ser? Esperando lo mejor, llamó a la única persona que podía haber llegado antes que ella.

Did Andy Take Her?

Although Andy usually came home an hour after Linnet, he’d have random days where he showed up earlier than usual.

Linnet hoped this was one of those times. 

Still, she dialed his number and pressed her phone against her cheek. “Hello, Andy, did you already pick up Kris from daycare?” the answer would leave her hyperventilating. 

It’s Not Him

“I wish,” Andy laughed. “I’m still in the office. But I can’t wait to get home to you guys.

” Linnet’s face turned pallid. Her hands found their way under her armpits, and she had to resist the urge to sink to the floor and wail. 

Someone had her daughter. Someone had stolen her. Linnet froze in place as the thought hit her. Her muscles spasmed, and she tipped onto the desk to keep herself from falling over. 

A Crucial Task

Linnet and Andy had been the only ones taking and picking up Kris from daycare for the longest time.

Occasionally, their babysitter would help with this crucial task. 

But Linnet rarely let her do it because, as a mom, she wanted to be with her daughter at all times. She never knew it would lead to all this one day. 

Take Control

She took deep breaths where she was, knowing she needed to be in control.

She couldn’t afford to lose herself like this when she needed to be getting to the root of this issue. 

Yet her heart wouldn’t stop racing, her mind conjuring the worst scenarios. Her throat and lungs felt clogged, and the world started to spin. 

Just Breathe

“Breathe,” she whispered. “Just breathe.” Noticing Linnet’s distress, the lady behind the desk tried to recall when Kris was taken.

She checked the log to remember who came to pick up the baby. 

“I think I know who took her,” she said in a hopeful tone. But Linnet’s heart was still racing inside her ribcage. Her chest tightened, and the dizziness that had threatened to drag her under fell on her again. 

Be Strong

“Breathe,” she said again, trying to stay in control.

She needed to keep calm, to let her motherly instincts take over. They would be vital in tracking down Kris. 

Despite the maelstrom of emotion rocking her, Linnet squared her shoulders and stood straight. She would be strong for her daughter. She would find her and bring hell to whoever took her.

Be Attentive 

The mom listened attentively as the lady before her spoke. All this was necessary to track Kris’s whereabouts. 

“It was a woman,” the lady said nervously. “She looked like she was in her early sixties, with short gray hair and an air of importance about her, pardon my language.

” Immediately, Linnet knew who had stolen her daughter. 

Time For War

 The terror flowing within her flash froze before burning rage washed over it.

She turned without a word, leaving the woman talking. She didn’t even bother to call Andy. 

This was a war between her and her mother-in-law. She needed to stand up for herself, or Molly would never respect her as a woman or a daughter-in-law. 

A Quiet Drive

The drive to Molly’s house was a quiet one for Linnet.

She didn’t even turn on her radio like she often did in the car, only drove silently up to her mother-in-law’s house. 

Her mind replayed how Molly always treated her like she didn’t matter. On their first meeting, Molly had worked hard to demean her. But that had only been the beginning. 

Her Past 

The woman had started small. She commented on Linnet’s dress and hairstyle, terming them too sensual. “Is this something you want to meet your future mother-in-law in?” she joked. 

But Linnet could tell she was serious. Molly commented on her nails, saying they were too long, and on her makeup, saying it was too much.

This night would give rise to an endless barrage of insults and passive-aggressive advances from the woman. 

Tasteless

She went from Linnet’s clothes to commenting on her and Andy’s house.

“As a girlfriend, you should ensure your place is perfect,” she said. She commented on the decor and said everything was tasteless and too derivative. 

She said Linnet’s appliances were dated and dangerous to use. But none of these things really got to Linnet until the woman mentioned one thing. 

The Food

“Your food is bland,” Molly said. She insisted that Linnet couldn’t feed Andy.

“My boy loves to eat good food. The only thing more tasteless than your decor is this lasagna,” she’d once said. 

This almost threw Linnet into a fit. The woman was saying Linnet couldn’t be a wife. She couldn’t take care of her own house or her boyfriend. Linnet had no idea she was yet to see the worst of her mother-in-law.

The Solution

Molly continued with her assault until Linnet grew impervious to the pain. The best way to handle the situation was to ignore Molly. 

Linnet would agree with everything she said just to avoid quarreling with the woman. To her, this was the only way to handle a mother-in-law hellbent on destroying everything she’d built.

If only she knew that all this would come back to bite her in the worst way possible. 

The Wedding Night 

She stifled her fury throughout the drive as more memories unfolded in her mind.

In one of these traumatizing moments, Molly had walked into her room on her wedding night, claiming that she wanted Andy to spend the night with his cousins instead of Linnet.

Linnet laughed at first, thinking her mother-in-law was joking. She wasn’t sure how the woman had driven more than two hundred miles to the resort Andy and Linnet were meant to spend their honeymoon.  

A Long Night

What followed afterward was a night full of screaming. Molly insisted that Linnet was out to destroy her bond with her son. 

She couldn’t see that she was ruining one of Linnet’s most important nights.

But this behavior wouldn’t stop here. Not with everything Molly was capable of. 

This Is My Wife

Andy tried to talk to her. He explained that Linnet was no longer just a girl in his life. She was the woman he’d chosen to live with for the rest of his life. 

But Molly would break down each time, claiming that her son was abandoning her for another woman.

She brought up nonexistent sicknesses and conditions, trying to blackmail her son into taking her side. 

Just Avoid It 

It wasn’t long before Andy took the route Linnet had taken. He agreed with most things his mom said, especially after Kris’s birth. 

The best way to defuse his mother’s behavior was to avoid it altogether.

This had worked for a while. But now, the woman had done the one thing Andy and Linnet thought she’d never do. 

A Cunning Woman

After Linnet refused to name Kris after Molly, the older woman decided she didn’t want anything to do with the baby.

Andy and Molly were happy with this decision.

But to their dismay, Molly went back on her word and started visiting with gifts for little Kris. If only the dotting parents knew what all this would lead to. 

The Consequences 

Linnet regretted failing to set clear boundaries between her and her mother-in-law.

Choosing to ignore the problem had led to this, and Molly hated it.

The only person she could blame here was herself. She’d looked the other way each time Molly did something wrong. Now the consequences of her actions were here to deal with her. 

It’s Very Disrespectful

Linnet had never felt this disrespected in her life. Boiling with anger, she parked her car on the sidewalk and walked up Molly’s sidewalk. She banged on the door, calling her mother-in-law out. 

“I want my daughter right now,” she wanted to scream. But she ate it, not letting the rage control her.

She’d say all she needed to say before the woman’s face and not to her door. If only she knew what Molly was doing to her little angel. 

Storming In 

Linnet banged on the door again. When no answer came, she called Andy and told him what was happening.

She stormed into the house, hoping nothing terrible happened to her daughter. 

But she braked the moment she got into the living room. The fear that had paralyzed her at the daycare returned in furious torrents. How could Molly do such a thing?

A Mess 

Linnet found the living room in disarray. Clothes were strewn all over as if someone had been in a hurry to leave.

The house computer was still on; Linnet could see out-of-state flight plans and ticket prices. 

She didn’t need to come closer to know what was happening. Molly had taken her daughter without permission and planned to take her only God knows where.

An Empty House 

She tried calling Molly, but all her calls went straight to voicemail.

As far as she saw it, this was kidnapping. Andy reached the house to find her seated in the middle of the living room. 

She looked up at him with puffy eyes. She’d thought about driving to the airport to stop Molly, but he’d asked her to wait. One thing was clear; she’d ensure her mother-in-law never underestimated her again.  

The Authorities 

Two officers walked into the house after Andy. One of them was on the phone, talking to another officer who was at the airport.

“We have your mother-in-law in custody,” the first officer reported.

“We want to know if you are going to press any charges.” Linnet turned to Andy. What did he want to do?

It Stops Today

Linnet and Andy had always been a team. She wouldn’t make such a drastic decision without his input. But he smiled at her, saying, “It’s high time we teach her a lesson.”

“She needs to learn that we have our boundaries. No more manipulations. No more tears. No more playing the victim. This ends today.”
